Corbett FAMILY 1788-PRESENT

I originally thought that I was descended from Thomas CORBETT (1809) son of Patrick CORBETT and Sera HAWCO.

However, over time I have discovered that my earliest ancestor on the CORBETT side from Chapel's Cove was Patrick CORBETT born 1788 who married Johanna MURPHY.

We are probably all descended from Thomas who got his land in 1796 and his cousin, Michael who inherited the adjoining land from his grandmother.

The children of Patrick CORBETT and Johanna MURPHY were Elizabeth who was born July 22, 1827; Patrick who was born September 30, 1828 and who is my great grandfather; Margaret who was born September 12, 1830; and Edward who was born in the 1830s.

There were probably others, but the records for 1836 to 1853 are missing because of a fire where they were kept at Harbour Grace.

Margaret had Alice in 1861 who died as a youth and Michael (nicknamed Mickel) who was born August, 1871. Michael married Mary FITZGIBBON of Newfoundland. They had five children. They are Michael born 1908, Ethelbert and Alice (twins) born 1911, Mary 1913 and Andrew 1916. Alice died in Chapel's Cove June 10, 2005.

Edward CORBETT married Anastasia HEALEY November 26, 1872. They had an Edward and Patrick who may have died young as there is no further information on them. They also had Jane born 1877, James Martin born 1879 and who never married, Anastasia (1881)and Josephine. Anastasia and Josephine went to the states.

Jane married Jeremiah QUINLAN (1877) from Holyrood April 10, 1900, and they had 6 children and raised their family in Holyrood. Here is a picture of Jane Quinlan.

Patrick born 1828 married Johanna COSTIGAN and they had six children.

They were John Francis born November 3, 1876; Johannah, born 1877 and died 1920 "Click" on The Craig Family ; James Thomas born February 15, 1879 and died April 29, 1965; "Click" on Uncle Jim (The Sparrow) Corbett ; Thomas Patrick , born October 15, 1880 in Chapel's Cove; He must not have survived, because on September 14, 1886 they had another Thomas who was my grandpa. "Click" on Grandpa's Family Mary Anne was born June 23, 1882 and Patrick who was born October 21, 1884. Only Johannah, James, Mary Anne and Thomas my grandpa) survived.

Johannah married Thomas CRAIG ("Click here for The Craig Family ) and had Tom, Bill (father of Tom CRAIG who is married to Floss and is living in Ontario, Canada). Stan (father of Patrick CRAIGwho is married to Joyce BYRNE living in Bell Island), Frank, Bess who married a CONNORS and had Kay CONNORS who married a CONWAY and is living in Ontario, and Mary.

The third oldest, James Thomas lived to be 88yrs old. He died April 29, 1965. James married Ellen (Nellie) HEALEY who was born 1878 in North Arm in Holyrood. They were married February 6, 1907.Nellie died November 27, 1948. They had one child, Annie Mary CORBETT who was (b 1909) and died August 24, 1993. Annie Mary married Stephen HAWCO (b 1903) (d August 15, 1992). It is said thatJames and Nellie had a son who did not survive. "Click" here for Uncle Jim (The Sparrow) Corbett

Annie Mary and Stephen HAWCO had a son, Harold (b abt 1947). Harold married Genevieve (Gen) DOODY and they have a son, Aubrey. Aubrey married Lori COSTELLO and they have a son, Stephen, named after Stephen HAWCO, his grandfather. Annie Mary and Stephen also raised a foster daughter from the time she was 9yrs old until she finished school. Her name is Linda KENNEDY who is married to Max TOOPE and they live in Come by Chance, NFLD. They also had several other foster children.

Mary Ann was alive in 1913 when Patrick, my great grandpa wrote his will, but died as a young woman. And Patrick, did not seem to have survived.

Thomas , my grandpa, left NFLD in 1903 and came to the states. He worked as an ironworker and probably worked on projects all over the US. I surmise this because he was a member of the International Ironworkers Union which is headquartered in Washington, D.C. and they confirmed this.

Thomas died October 29, 1926 as a result of blood poisoning from a laceration to the middle finger of his right hand sustained at work. He died in the Methodist/Episcopal Hospital in Brooklyn, New York where he was living at the time. At the time of his death, he may have been working on one of the tunnels or bridges between New York and New Jersey. The Brooklyn Bridge was completed in 1869 way before my grandfather's time, but ironworkers continue to maintain this bridge.

Thomas married Elizabeth (Lizzie) RICE who was born in Newark, NJ on April 14, 1896. They were married June 30, 1914 at St. Andrew's Catholic Church in New York City. She died January 13, 1929 there. These are my paternal grandparents. "Click" on The Rice Family

The children of Thomas and Lizzie were John, who was the oldest. He was born around 1915 in New York. After the deaths of Thomas and Lizzie, John went to work on a farm in Freehold, NJ and marriedElla who was the "farmer's daughter". He spent his entire life there. He died around 1965. They had no children. Ella is also deceased.

The second oldest child was James Aloysius who was born September 30, 1916 in Newark, NJ and died in East Orange in 1964. He was married to Peggy WRIGHT who was born in Newark in 1921. She died in East Orange in 1992.

James and Peggy had three children. All are married with families. They are James, Kathleen and William (Billy)

Thomas Joseph is my Dad. He was born May 24, 1918 in Newark, NJ. He died July 20, 1975 in Bloomfield, NJ. He married Mary SCOFIELD, my Mom , who was born November 22, 1920 in Newark psd  .  Mom, Mary (Mollie) lThere are three of us. I have two brothers. They are Thomas and Glenn.

Mary died December 26, 2001 in New Jersey. They married around 1940. They have 5 sons and also several grandchildren.

Thomas and Elizabeth also had a daughter, Eleanor, who was born in January 1922 and died in January 1926, 9 months before the death of her father. I believe they were living in Brooklyn, New York at that time, and I am attempting to get Elinor's death certificate. Eleanor is buried in Holy Cross Cemetery in Kearny, New Jersey.

The next child of Thomas and Elizabeth is Gladys CORBETT born January 7, 1924. She married Stanley PASCHICK who died 1991 in Union, NJ. Gladys died May 20, 2001 and her son, Robert died 6 months later.. "Click" on Grandpa's Family

Shortly after the death of my grandpa, Thomas, his wife, my grandma, Elizabeth, had a stroke at age 31 yrs. She died from that stroke before her 33rd birthday on January 13, 1929.

I am still working at unraveling several lines of CORBETTS who reside in Chapel's Cove, NFLD today. However, I am certain that we, along with others there, have descended from the Thomas CORBETT who purchased his land from the crown and his cousin, Michael CORBETT who inherited his adjoining land from his grandmother.

The line I originally thought I came from was Patrick CORBETT born roughly the same time as my great great grandfather, Patrick (son of Patrick CORBETT and Johanna MURPHY) This Patrick was probably his first cousin and the son of Thomas.

This Patrick CORBETT married Sera HAWCO in Chapel's Cove, Newfoundland on February 28, 1808. Sera HAWCO was the daughter of Thomas HAWCO and Sarah ? Thomas was the son of Thomas HAWCO who was the brother of William and the cousin of Philip who claimed land in Chapel's Cove in the late 1700s. The HAWCOS were part of the 11 first families that settled in Newfoundland. They married the Irish and lost the "French Connection". They were originally called HACQUOIL and they came from the Channel Island of Jersey. The name was changed to HAWCO and is sometimes seen in the records as HAWKO.

"Click" on The Channel Island of Jersey

Patrick CORBETT and Sera HAWCO had six children; Thomas was born 1809; Edward born November 2, 1810; Elinor was born November 21, 1813; John was born October 27, 1815; Mary was born June 8, 1818; and Bartholomew was born May 4, 1821.

I have redone my web pages and have omitted many of the living members of the family on the advice of other genealogists. However, if you are interested, I do have the other information on the living members.
