a short history of newfoundland by brendan

Newfoundland was settled over a thousand years ago by the Vikings at Lance aux Meadows. In 1497 John Cabot is believed to have reached our shores at Bonavista. It became a free fishing land where people from all nations could take and cure fish.

In 1583 Sir Humphrey Gilbert took possession of Nfld forBritain without becoming a formal colony.

In 1832 we gained what is known as representative government, and in 1833 the system called responsible government- meaning full self-government over our own internal affairs.

By 1930 Nfld had become a dominion, possessing full sovereignty as a nation. This sovereignty was voluntarily suspended from 1933 to 1949 in the days of the commission government, but when NFLD joined Confederation with Canada in 1949, it did so as a free and sovereign nation.

As a former NFLD History teacher, I hope that helps.Best regards,Brendan J. WhiteFrom the NFLD-Rootsweb List
